"When the floods came, we lost crops, homes, and hope. Giving our land was not easy, but it was the only way to protect our children and our future."

— Mr. Mutende, Community Elder

His words reflect the reality faced by many families—and the extraordinary response that followed. Community members voluntarily donated prime land to enable the construction of a flood-mitigation valley tank, transforming loss into a long-term solution.

From Community Commitment to National Action

The project is being constructed by Uganda's Ministry of Water and Environment, in close coordination with the Sironko District Local Government and local leaders. This partnership combines national technical expertise, local governance, and community leadership—ensuring accountability, sustainability, and long-term impact.

The official groundbreaking marked the transition from planning to action, signaling a shared commitment to climate resilience at all levels.

Climate Adaptation in Action

Heavy machinery begins excavation works for the valley tank, marking the start of construction led by the Ministry of Water and Environment.

The valley tank is designed to capture and manage excess water during heavy rains, reducing flood risks while improving water availability during dry seasons.

Expected Impact

  • Protect 1,200+ people from recurrent flooding
  • Safeguard 300+ hectares of agricultural land
  • Improve water access for smallholder farmers and livestock keepers
  • Reduce disaster-related losses and humanitarian assistance needs

Local Action, Global Relevance

This initiative contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG 6 – Clean Water & Sanitation SDG 11 – Sustainable Communities SDG 13 – Climate Action

It reflects international best practice in locally led climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and community-centered development.
